Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award Ron Carey with Swan Mayor Mick Wainwright and Premier Colin Barnett.
Each year the City presents Citizenship Awards to outstanding individuals and groups for their contributions.
Mr Carey, a South Guildford resident, was nominated for his many years of community service and his passion for caring for others.
He has volunteered with Community Care Services for seven years and dedicates his time to being a volunteer driver, assisting people who need transport to medical and social appointments.
The former police officer regularly volunteers up to three shifts a week and is always available to fill in and do extra when required.
He is also the chairman of the Swan Community Care Services Advisory Committee, which oversees 80 volunteers.
The committee is instrumental in providing services to assist the elderly and younger people with a disability to remain in their homes. Last year, Mr Carey ramped up his efforts in lobbying for more aged care planning in the City of Swan.
He said he hoped to continue that this year. “We’ve contacted 21 aged-care providers about the old Swan District Hospital site, so we’re hoping something will come of that,” he said.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Brooke Lippinkhof won the Citizenship Award for a person under 25 years for her community group volunteering efforts in the Altone region.
Brockman Community House and the Midland Men’s Shed received group awards.

If you are interested in being a Street Team member to help distribute posters and fliers in your hometown, please email: dartour@gmail . com . For tour dates see: http://www . darwilliams . com About Dar Williams "With every album, I’m trying to figure out what I don’t have to say, while still giving each song its due," Dar Williams says. Of her new album, Promised Land, Williams commented, "On this one, I was paring the stories down to their core. I wanted the songs to sound simple and down to what they were meant to be, which is hard to do. It takes a lot of knowledge to get to the point where you can say what you need to say — no more, no less." To peel her insightful, melodic story-songs down to their essence, as well as inject them with the energy and momentum they clearly called for, Williams enlisted Brad Wood, a Grammy-nominated producer and musician known for his work with rock singer-songwriters Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, and Ben Lee. "Dar was looking to try something different and get out of her comfort zone," Wood says. "She had made a number of records and it seemed like a good time, career-wise, for her to make a chan I was flattered that she thought to ask me to help. Her voice is so great that you can do just about anything behind her and it’s going to sound cool!" Personally inspired by the spindly live feel of late '70s/early '80s albums by the Police, Elvis Costello, and the Pretenders, Wood manages to make Williams' elegant, worldly songs sound visceral and urgent, while preserving the integrity and emotion that have been hallmarks of her sound (along with a beautifully intimate, bell-clear voice) since Williams began playing out on the Northeast singer-songwriter circuit in the early ’90s. “Brad understood the songs and gave them the space they needed,” Williams says. “I love that clean, straightforward sound he gets.” And so Promised Land includes several immediately engaging toe-tappers, such as “It’s Alright,” “The Easy Way,” “Buzzer,” and “Go to the Woods,” as well as Williams’ trademark thoughtful balladry, including the keenly felt “Book of Love,” “The Tide Falls Away,” and “You Are Everyone. http://www . darwilliams . com In the past, Williams’ songwriting has located the personal in such universal topics as politics, religion, sexuality, and family. This time, rather than tie the songs together around any particular theme. JAMES McMURTRY will performon Monday 12 October at the The Bongo Club @ 7:30pm JUST ANNOUNCED!! Michael Scott Parker and the Creative Creature Community
Creative News
Creative Creature Community
Vision is a powerful tool. A great musician once told Michael, "If you can visualize your fingers playing the song, it is more effective than practicing hours and hours a day." The more we can imagine and visualize, the greater our accomplishments can be. As a visionary, Michael "sees" how she wants to be involved and ways she can connect and grow. The bigger the community you have, the more vision you can create!
As you know, we have been sharing in a greater mission by cultivating a mind state of sustainability, with our sisters in the arts, for the M.A.L.I. Festival. The festival catalyzed opportunities to connect with the Austin community. We've pulled together resources with the artists at GAGA, repurposed materials in a creative way, making our show attire from donations, got the kids involved with the process of being in a creative community, making band merchandise and learning music with Michael.
The GAGA GALA was a special event. Michael contributed her time and creativity to appreciative participants, who brought her vision into reality.. the construction of her performance materials with the talents of her fans.
This Thursday, May 21, South Congress St. Bridge, 7PM - We are having one final public appearance before the MALI Festival. We'll be hanging out together underneath the South Congress Bridge, with the Austin Bat Colony. Yes, real bats! They were kind enough to pose for our band poster. We'll be jamming, selling festival tickets, and painting together on the Creature Community Canvas! Come out and paint at sunset with the band. They might give you some cake.
And tomorrow, tune in to KOOP 91.7FM, at 11am to hear another local artist, Joanna Barbera and the director of the M.A.L.I Festival, P.O.W., do an in-studio interview on "What's a girl to do?"
